Freehold Runner Aims for Sub-5 Mile, Sub-19 5K, and Championship| News Transcript

Freehold Borough senior Mackenzie Roche is seeking to run 3.1 miles in less than 19 minutes this season for meets at Ocean County park, and a championship title in the Freehold Regional School District Championships, according to the News Transcript.

In the meantime, she'll look to go sub-20 minutes on the difficult terrain of Holmdel Park meets, and keep her eye on the spring track season, where she hopes to run the 1,600 in under five minutes. Last year, she finished the season with a new school record: 5:11:38.

From the article:

This summer has been all about building up a base for the long harrier season.

"It's been pretty much heavy mileage," Roche said of her training, most of which has been in Lavallette, where her family has a summer house. Her summer training, which includes cruise miles, has her ahead of where she was at this time last year, which is a very encouraging sign.

Among Roche's goals for the 2009 cross country season is winning the Freehold Regional High School District championship. She was second at the FRHSD Championships in 2008 behind the graduated Rachel Morris of Colts Neck High School.
