Republican Candidates to Host Meet n’ Greet

Freehold.InJersey received an email yesterday from Council Candidate Ted Miller, announcing a Meet and Greet night for invited guests and their friends at Main Street Bistro.

Here's the flier:

"We want people interested in supporting our campaign to come out and ask us questions and tell us what they want from us as Council Members," Ted explained in a follow-up call. "It's not exclusive, but we need people to RSVP because it's at a restaurant in a private room."

Invitations went out via email to more than 500 folks on a Republican mailing list and another few hundred by snail mail. For those interested in coming that did not receive invites, Miller suggested trying to find a friend that had one, or calling the RSVP number to see if there's extra room at the event.

"We want a night for people that support what we're trying to do, or might want to support us," he said. "So we're doing a nice event where we can all eat and drink and discuss what needs to be done in town."

    So let me understand this:

    - I can’t ask a question of the 2 gentleman running for office because I’m not on the invitation list.

    - I’m not on the invitation list because I didn’t register with the Monmouth County Republicans.

So I really have to register as a Republican (and be expected to support said party) in order to even be invited to ask a question to determine if I want to vote Republican?

I’m confused. Shouldn’t a Q&A be opened to the public?

      dfx,

Just to clarify, I didn’t say invitees were registered Republicans or part of the Monmouth County Republicans. Just that the Republican candidates had a mailing list of supporters they sent the invites to.

The story reports that “Invitations went out via email to more than 500 folks on a Republican mailing list and another few hundred by snail mail.” – so I can only respond to what I’m reading. My comment really pertains to the fact that on the surface this meet & greet doesn’t really appear as a meeting that is open to all.

For example, I don’t think it’s too far of a stretch to assume that all 500 seats will be filled considering our town has over 11K (legal) residents. If that’s the case, then what chance will I have – as an undecided voter – to ask my questions or find out what Newman or Miller are bringing to the table?

A concerned voter who just wants the facts…

    Dear DFX,

There is limited space available due to this being held in a small location (there is no place large enough to economically fit all registered voters in one place). Please e-mail me and I will gladly put you on the guest list:
    johnfnewman@yahoo.com.

In the event that you cannot make this meeting, I will gladly make myself personally available to you to answer any questions that you may have. I look forward to hearing from you.

    - John

    DFX,

Go to a council meeting and speak directly to Mr LeVine or Mrs Shutzer. They arent hard to find and unlike a one time event, they are there 4 times a month.

Mr. Newman heres a question for you. If you two canidates were so quick to blame the imcumbents for the failure of the debate, why not hold this event as an open forum at an open venue? why have a private session so you can gain the newspapers credit for this private event? Seems like you are making this a safe event, why not see all people in freeholds questions not just the ones you and Miller hand select? Seems more like a republican free dinner then a true whats best for freehold event?

Who is paying for this event?

If anyone that reads this is going to this lovely event, why dont you ask miller or newman how they claimed a group was running the debate fairly and wasnt involved at all. A statement from the CIC clearly blows the theory out of the water that the debate was fair or organized properly. Miller and Newman dont asnwer question, they just let things go, they run on here and make statements and leave, maybe they think they are the “Yankees”? answer the people gentlemen but make sure you answer with the truth!

FYI here the statement from the CIC>>>>

On behalf of the CIC, I would like to make one clarification to item #1 of Mr. Friedman’s post above which states that the Citizen Debate Committee comprised of “members of the Freehold Borough CIC…” Any participation with the Citizen Debate Committee by certain members of the Freehold Borough CIC was strictly in their own individual capacities, and the CIC was in fact uninvolved in the planning or execution of the proposed debate, nor had the debate planning been discussed at any CIC meeting. The CIC continues to work towards fulfilling its stated mission and does not become involved in election campaigns.

another question- Ted mller is closely linked to Brian Sullivan, a member of the CIC, both claimed the CIC had something to do with the debate which it didnt. Now, we learn that brian tried to use the CIC to have a form signed involving the post office WITHOUT the members of the CIC knowing it was a republican party form. Ted do you think its ok to lie and misrepresent information to the people of freehold? it seems to be a common practice this election. Using a bi-partisan group without them knowing is criminal! shame on you Ted Miller and Brian Sullivan

Even worse, IMO, is what the candidate who dropped out posted on the (now locked) FV thread:
“This is one of those times where I am oh so happy to be on the other side of the globe. I can just sit back and laugh at all of this. Good to see the status quo has remained in tact back home!! Further proof of the status quo remaining in tact will show itself on election day when less than 50% of the voting public in Freehold Boro actually show up at the polls to vote.

There are times when I get homesick, and then there are times like this, when I am so happy to be so far away from it all!!”

    Nice.

As a republican i am so embarrashed by all of this. Mr miller can not be trusted! He went as fair as to attack other candidates families, do we want people like this running our town? It sad, we have good hard working people in freehold and what miller, newman and sullivan have done is unacceptable. Mr defonzo, takes shots at our town? whats next? it truely is a sad day in freehold. I hope we all rise together on election day and support Levine and Shutzer to show these three we dont want things like this in freehold no matter what party you are!!!

As far as the freehold voice or as i refer to it the ted miller puppet voice, no one should give an merit to the one sided reporting on there, its all propoganda from ted through brian. i think its sad that Ms. Curry is being dragged into this, she does a nice job on most of her reports, she was probaly lied to like everyone else

    FB Deanna,

Sorry i didnt realize you were the spelling and general advice giver on this site. Im writting from a blackberry which makes it difficult at times!

Why is it when some presents facts against what another believes, such as deanna, its childish and immature? did we lose free speech somewhere along the line and i missed it? vote for your “good guys”, go right ahead! you can be on the losing side come election night thats fine!

I do plan to go to this event and I’m not a republican.
For any political event (in case some of you are not aware) depending on the political party that’s hosting it the invitations as a norm go out to people from that particular party unless an individual otherwise shows an interest to the person running ahead of time. Unfortunately this place their hosting it at is small. I won’t mention any names here but maybe things would have been different if the afore planned debate that was so childishly dealt with by some, actually had taken place.

Just for the record the above “Lisa” is not me; I’ve posted under our shared name before and have mentioned in some posts that I’m on the CIC.

Lisa (above),if you want, I’ll keep posting as Lisa S so we don’t get confused. I keep thinking about starting a nationwide Lisa organization…there’s one for men named Bob and I accidentally walked into an annual Bob convention in Texas. Yes, it was a hoot.

    Hi all,

We’ve had some problems on this thread with users posting under multiple names and providing us with false email addresses. This will not be tolerated, and these users have been placed on a “moderate” list so that their comments will not appear directly to the site.

You must provide a real email address to register with and use this site.

    Thank you,

    Beverly,

I am writing to address people posting baseless attacks against my character. I do not believe that we have ever met, nor that you know anything about me and your attacks reflect that.
For the record I am in no way connected with Mr. Miller on any political level. I had previously spent 10 years working for the election and re-election of dozens of democratic candidates. I was approached by a group of citizens, many of which serve on various Borough committees, and asked to draft a letter and work with the APP and then the LOWV to organize a debate for the candidates. I believe I was approached because I have years of political event planning experience and because I have never been involved in local politics and am presently not involved in politics on any level.
I believed then, as I do now, that a debate by the candidates, on the issues that affect the Borough’s future is a positive event for the candidates and the residents.
I have in no way attacked you nor anyone. In fact I do not know you. Our letter to the candidates was clear as to who was sponsoring the debate, the Asbury Park Press. Thereafter the citizens were attacked falsely on various websites; and when the candidates did not agree on a format those attacks on the citizens grew.
People demanded that the facts come out. I worked and crafted a statement that was reviewed and commented on by both the Democrats and the Republicans and their comments were included. If either side felt that the facts as stated were false I have no doubt they would have said so; they did not. The rest of the citizens, men and women of upstanding character, were at that point fearful of further baseless attacks on their character as well, and hoped, that the release of a statement, our only statement, would address previous attacks. Our letter also clearly says the debate would have been run by the League of Women Voters. I am not sure what more I, or anyone, could have done to ensure the fairness of the debate or our single response to the attacks made against us.
No one has criticized the actual facts of the statement. One person felt the need to clarity that the CIC was not involved; I see no place in the letter or the statement that says that the CIC was a sponsor, though I gladly accept that clarification. The only mention of the CIC in our statement was factually true and was in response to previous statements by others.
I also now understand that people have longstanding issues wit Mr. Miller and Mr. Sullivan. I do not know what those issues are nor do they concern me and I do not want to be dragged into your personal fights.
I do not condone personal attacks on anyone. I would not support any person who attacks people personally. I believe people should focus on policy issues.
If you have any real criticism of the concept of candidates debating, the letter requesting a debate, or the facts of the statement, I would be happy to discuss them with you in a respectful and civil manner. I do however demand that you cease and desist your attacks upon me and my character.
My family has owned property, and has worked in the Borough for 40 years, we own two of the oldest building in town and I live in the Borough. The positive future development of the Borough has been what I have been working for since I began running my family business.
I would expect that upon reflection you too would consider your attacks of a person who you have never met, and probably have never heard of, over the top.

    Regards,
    Jeffrey J. Friedman
