Election Night Results & Photos
Election winner Sharon Shutzer (1,166 votes) celebrated quietly and cautiously at the Democratic festivities at the American Legion this evening. Shutzer's running-mate Marc LeVine, a Democratic incumbent, received the least number of votes among the four candidates and will likely be replaced on Council by Republican John Newman, unless provisional ballots change the outcome.
Check out the gallery after the jump:
"There are still absentees to be counted," Shutzer said, explaining the close race among her, second-place John Newman (1,152 votes) and third-place Ted Miller (1,126 votes). Shutzer helped wrap up leftover food at the party while LeVine talked quietly with Mayor Wilson and Democratic supporters.
Across town, John Newman and running-mate Ted Miller celebrated the early results, satisfied with the Republican victory and hopeful about provisional ballots.
"We know there are still votes to be counted," Miller said. "But it's a good night for the party."
"This is the first time a Republican's been elected to council in many years," Newman said. "It's a great night for the party, and I'm very happy and excited for what's next."
Today's votes and the absentee ballots had all been accounted for by shortly after 10PM, according to County Clerk Claire French; provisional ballots remained to be tallied.
The final numbers for tonight are:
| REP - Ted E. Miller | 1,126 | 24.95% |
| REP - John F. Newman | 1,152 | 25.53% |
| DEM - Sharon C. Shutzer | 1,166 | 25.84% |
| DEM - Marc D. LeVine | 1,067 | 23.64% |
| Write-In | 2 | 0.04% |
| Total | 4,513 | 100.00% |

It a sad day for Freehold boro. Its time for the good old boy politics that run the town to end. Getting rid of Shutzer would have been a step in the right direction.
Councilman Marc LeVine on November 4th, 2009
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate both John Newman and my running mate, Councilwoman Sharon Shutzer on their election to the Freehold Borough Council.
I especially want to thank the people of Freehold Borough for electing me three times for this office since 1990. Please let me also thank the Mayor and Council for appointing me to fill out the remaining year of former Councilman, Michael Toubin’s unexpired term in October 2005. While there are many residents, who wish to but never get to serve their town on a governing body, I have been more than blessed being given the opportunity to serve Freehold Borough for 10 years, overall.
During my congratulatory phone call to John (Newman) last night, I thanked him for taking the “high road” during the recently completed election cycle and proving himself to be a quality candidate, well deserving of his victory.
John and I served together on the town’s first Rental Property Review Committee and I found him to be highly intelligent and very results oriented in his approach to problem solving. The skills he brought to that committee should help make his time on the governing body, highly successful. John knows he can call on me whenever he needs to for consultation on a variety of issues during his initial learning curve on the Council. I am here to help him any way I can.
I would also like to take this time to thank the Mayor, my fellow Council members, our town’s professionals, department heads and their staffs for helping to make those of us at the table look good the majority of the time, as we serve the public interest. Our Borough employee’s jobs are tough and their resources are often limited, but they do their very best to address and resolve our resident’s daily challenges from one end of town to the other – all hours of the day.
As for where I go from here, it is very clear to me that I may once again travel some of the same roads I have already traversed and am rather well familiar with – doing good for others. I will surely explore a few new roads along my journey, as it is in my nature to learn new things and apply them, also for the benefit of my fellow man. I am very excited to see what comes next.
I have always given the town and people I love 110% of myself and always voted my convictions at the Council table. In the hours post my defeat I have been hearing from many residents that there is much appreciation for my past efforts and results on the Council. There is also much encouragement from them to do even more. There is great comfort and satisfaction in their expressions of appreciation and encouragement.
To all I say that I will always stand able and ready to help make my hometown the best that it can possibly be, any way I possibly can. There is no end here, only a new beginning. Thank you and bless our terrific town and all who live here!
Regards,
Councilman Marc LeVine

What a professional and articulate response to a heartfelt concession speech “Grimis” – BRAVO. I’m sure your family is proud of the quick wit, compassion, and integrety displayed in this posting as well as the countless other messages you post under different monikers. Way to positively portray our town.

Colleen,
Im so glad you have done this! Finally a site that doesnt let people have 5 screen names and write the same fact over and over! Hats off to you and the APP for stopping that! You took some nice pics from the parties!

Dan Xavier,
I just want to thank you for your attempt to restore some dignity to the traditional practice of posting political concession letters in public places for all to read. It is very scary to think that the people, who would ridicule such letters and then use profanity towards those, who respect “doing the right thing,” may also be the parents of young, impressionable children. What horrible role models, teaching children to mock civility.
Neither of us have ever seen anyone ridicule concession letters whenever they have appeared in newsprint. It’s just not done. All would agree that such letters are absolutely the right thing to publish and writing them represents class, which these buffoons obviously lack.
We’re now in the Internet Age, where cowards hide behind aliases and post insults from proxy sites, attacking anyone they can, including seated Board of Education members like you, Dan Xavier. Where is the respect for a man, who is responsible for the education of our local school children?
It is a sorry state of affairs that this goes on at Freehold.Injersey.com, where residents and their families (including young children) are encouraged to visit for the news of the day around our town on a board run by a legitimate media group like Gannett.
It is good that many of us have a fair idea, who is behind the majority of these rude posts, here and elsewhere, on local blogs serving the Freehold area. They are surely racking up the points for bad behaviors.
All people with good values will agree with us and be reviled by what these others post. Fortuntely, you and I sign our names to our posts. People do respect that.
Thank you.

GFY,
Your very mature and wise, must be a ted miller supporter or ted himself. I hope COLLEEN checks into this account to make sure it is legitimate. Colleen you will be doing this right?
Dan, much credit to you for displaying your name, your on the right side, not like these miller maniacs. I find it so laughable that in a year with Republicans dominating all over the state that ted STILL couldnt get elected, thats strike 3 ted, your out! Now can our hard working Mayor and Councilpeople please get back to work and not deal with the miller circus. Actually ted, run again next year so i can watch a hard working dedicated man like Jaye Simms beat you!

Morris,
Thank you for the correction, though I wish it had come in a more cordial manner. In trying to bring the Freehold community the news as quickly as possible, I did indeed forget to capitalize the V. Luckily, hyperlocal blogs continue to prove to be self-correcting thanks to vigilant readers, and I’m grateful for readers that help ensure my reporting is accurate.
