  • Arctic cold grips New Jersey as storm exits

by Steven DiMartino on January 31st, 2010 | Comment

The low pressure system that brought over 6 inches of snow to many locations throughout southern New Jersey is exiting into the Atlantic.  Behind it, an Arctic air mass remains in control with temperatures in the single digits and teens for morning lows.

  • Arctic cold start to the day, snow on the way!

There's a lot to cover this morning!  So let's get to it!

The area of precipitation that will impact the northern Atlantic this afternoon through this evening is currently developing over the Tennessee Valley and western Virginia under the influence of the strong Sub Tropical disturbance that is driving towards the Mid Atlantic coast.  The [...]

  • Monmouth County To Close Youth Detention Center

by Art Gallagher on January 29th, 2010 | Comment

    Finally.

Bob Jordan at the Asbury Park Press reports that the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders voted 3-2 along party lines to close the Youth Detention Center. The three Republican Freeholders voted for the closure, while the two Democrats voted against.

Monmouth will send its roughly 25 detained youth to Middlesex County's kiddy jail at a cost of $2.5 million per year. This will result in a $2 million per year savings.

Democratic Freeholder John D'Amico came up with a good idea in his remarks opposing the closure. He questioned why privatizing the Monmouth County Jail was not on the table as a cost cutting measure. He said the county could save between $4.7 and $9.4 million per year by turning the jail over to a private company, without jeopardizing public safety. Superb! Let's get that done!

And while we're on privatization, does anyone else think its crazy to spend over $100,000 per year per detainee for the youths? Saving $2,000,000 per year sounds pretty good, but to spend $2,500,000 per year to detain 25 kids sounds absolutely insane. Let's privatize the YTD rather than send the kids and the money to Middlesex.

I offer to do the job for $1,900,000 per year. If there is over 40 kids to be detained over the summer, that's OK, no extra charge. I'll keep the money and the kids in Monmouth County. I'll create jobs and pay taxes.

I'm not kidding. If the Freeholders want to save another $600K per year and really turn those kids' lives around, they know how to reach me.

  • Freeholders Say ‘See Ya’ to Delinquents

The Board of Freeholders has voted to shut down the Youth Detention Center on Dutch Road in Freehold Township, according to today's APP.

In a party-line vote, the majority Republicans voted to close the facility by July and begin to share services with Middlesex County instead.

John D’Amico did a good job when he was first elected to the Board of Freeholders years ago. However, as time went on he fed at the public trough and became, in my opinion, another political hack. It is a shame that Barb McMarrow is no longer representing the people of Monmouth County;she did the right thing not the PARTY thing…

  • Newman Pushes for Citizen Service Act

by Colleen Curry on January 28th, 2010 | Comment

Freehold Borough Council newbie John Newman will make the case for his proposed Citizen Service Act at next Monday's Council meeting, after it failed to get any other Council member to second its introduction at last week's workshop.

The proposed ordinance would force the Borough to have a more transparent process for appointing citizens [...]

I was at the above mentioned meeting and I don’t see why anyone is making this out to be anything more then a request for more information. Maybe I am wrong but it was clearly stated that it was not seconded because of lack of information or some questions. Some council members seemed very eager to find out more. On another page earlier today, Mr Newman made some comments that made it seem like it was a party line issue, I certainly didnt see it as that at all. I have faith that our officals will look into this matter and make a decision with the best interest of the voters, as they always do! Seems to me like this MAY BE a bad play on politics! I thought we were above this, below you will see the statement made by Newman. Hopefully, he can clear up why this is being made into a political issue rather then a lack of information issue.

      Quoted today
” The ordinance was properly placed before the council for its approval. A second to the motion would have just opened it up for discussion; and the person who seconded the motion would not even have to vote approvingly of the ordinance at the end of the day.

It was also said that the council did not have sufficient information to offer a second. What was not explained was that they did physically have the ordinance at the same time as the rest of their agenda packet was delivered to them; and if they needed more explanation, a second could have brought out further discussion.

The ordinance will again be placed before the council at the next meeting.”

Here we go, I hoped Newman would surprise us and work for the betterment of our town. Alais, he has instituted “politics as usual”. His idea belonged in a caucas for discussion, not the “poping” of an ordinance at a public meeting. Also, he should know that the Boro attorney, not a Councilman, drafts all ordinances. In less than a month I an convinced Newman is no more than a “political antagonist” and must GO…

Yes, though the temps were cold, peoples hearts were very warm!
This was well attended, many families from all over western monmouth showed incredible generosity.
Some children even emptied thier piggy banks. Jaye Simms was there helping sort the supplies and seal cartons with us for a few hours and Schnurr dropped a trunk full of supples too.
When the “Convoy of Hope” truck came at 4:15, it was awsome seeing how much was collected with such sort notification.

Ted, you are really masterful with a camera. This is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

I left my Camera home, this was not a “picture” thing…,

As the day progressed, I was seeing the images of generosity, so I started capturing what I was seeing with the camera on my cell phone. When I came home to look over these images (blackberry did a good job ahh?), a “story board” developed…telling images of the “net accumulation”, visualizing the days heart filled deposits at the spontaneous “generosity bank” here in Freehold!

Watching the tragedy unfold at home, you want to help, you need to help, but you feel helpless being so far away. Saturday, our community had a venue where they can physically get involved with relief. People drove from all over western Monmouth to join us in Freehold Borough to help. And there will be many more opportunities around here to follow…,

Ted, I DO know your work. Please don’t be humble about it. Your photography is truly breathtaking. I really want to see more from you. Do you know that your neon Freehold sign image on the corner of Main and South, is the most difficult to capture and you did it perfectly? I know two photographers who were not able to do what you did with that.

Yes, “a story board developed” you say — but that’s it! your talent. I look forward to your next montage — complete with just as glorious music (thanks for the John Lennon…)

Really neat, we count admitted illegals in OUR NATIONAL CENSUS! Now that we know who and where they are, let’s ship them back to THEIR country. We will help open jobs for AMERICANS. If we were illegal in Mexico we would be in a rotten jail cell, no laweyer and Spanish only. Let’s cut OUR COSTS and deport them all…
