A group of landlords is suing Freehold Borough, claiming that the licensing and registration fees for rental properties are unconstitutional.

I probably should’nt call this breaking news. I have been paying very close attention to the issues and situation for months and I cannot say that I am surprised. I do believe it is all very avoidable.

I am no fan of landlords and rentals in this town. They have decimated entire neighborhoods, and even in the case of good rentals, I still think this town would be better with owner occupied homes. That is not the reality we face. The landlords are here and I have always said that the rental regulations have got to be fair and take all sides into account. That belief is for the purpose of avoiding a law suit like this.

I see in the article above, the Mayor is talking tough. I know his heart is in the right place, but after seeing what happened with past suits, I have to worry. I do hope the town has a good and solid defense.

We saw the mayor and council talk tough in the past in reference to the muster zone suit. During that suit the governing body was in over its head and had no idea what they were dealing with. That cost this town greatly and we are in far worse shape as the result of it. Lets hope this is not a repeat, we cannot afford another loss like that. It could easily turn into the final nail in the coffin for this town which is still struggling with many issues.

Like I said, I know the mayors heart is in the right place, but I hope his head is.

    • Freehold Landlord Association of New Jersey 5:21 pm on August 10, 2010 Permalink | Reply

The Freehold Landlord Association of New Jersey has sought, since it’s formation in October 2009, a constructive dialogue with the Mayor and Council of Freehold Borough to address the concerns that all Freehold Borough residents have and concerns regarding the continued violations of tenants and property owners’ constitutional rights by the Borough.

To that end the FLANJ has made every effort to work with the Borough to address these issues by attending every Rental Advisory Committee meeting, as well as meetings with all of the non-elected Borough Officials who are involved with the regulation and oversight of rental property in the Borough.

We have attended most of the Borough Council meetings this year, and we have requested on numerous occasions to have meeting either individually or with Council as a whole. Our efforts have been rebuffed and ridiculed by the Mayor and Council and they have refused to meet with us.

By continuing to violate the Constitutional Rights of both tenants and property owners through the passage of the most recent incarnation of Rental property regulations and by their failure to enter into a constructive dialogue with over a quarter of the Borough’s property owners, the Mayor and Council have chosen conflict over cooperation and have exposed all taxpayers to financial harm by their failure to follow the law.

The Freehold Landlord Association of New Jersey is saddened that the Mayor and Council have chosen to have these matters resolved in a Monmouth County courtroom instead of a Freehold Borough conference room.

Very unfortunate development. It’s especially tough when profit-seekers enter established neighborhoods, impose their poor housing management skills on a town and its residents, and allow the situation to get out of control. People have the right to do business, but they do not have the right to allow their business to hinder the quality of life of others.

I hope our town has the strength and resolve to come out and support the Mayor and Council in defending the quality of life in Freehold Borough. When it comes to quality of life there is no compromise.

Granted, I am currently on the other side of the globe, so I do not have my “ear to the ground” as well as I could if I were back home…however, from what I have read in the few articles printed about this issue…and yes, even on local blog websites…over the last few months, it seems to me that, just as with other issues which affect this town, those involved tend to lump entire groups of people together rather than seaparating “the good” from “the bad”.

Those landlords that help create quality of life issues in Freehold Boro need to be dealt with quickly, effectively, and lawfully. Those landlords that conduct their business lawfully, and who help contribute to quality of life in the Boro do not deserve to be lumped into the same category as the ones who are simply here to make a quick and easy buck. And these “good” landlords should certainly not have to shoulder the burden of paying the Boro back for the bad deeds of the “bad” landlords

As a child of Freehold when 99% of the homes were owner occupied, I have seen the downfall of many areas of the boro. There are many absentee landlords and overcrowding of properties with individuals who do not care it is a shame. Seems to me the majority of the landlords are interested in the almight dollar.

I was just on the phone with a Freehold resident, who advised me to read a posting on a local blog condemning the Freehold Borough Neighborhood Pride Committee’s involvement in this recent cleanup effort, because it involved day laborers and their advocates.

Unwritten in the rant, but still very apparent was the writer’s distaste for a block party that the NPC ran over on Marcy Street, last fall. That particular neighborhood has many rental properties and is home to many immigrants in our town. At the time, certain individuals in Freehold Borough tried to attack our group for running a town sponsored event (everything offered at the party was actually donated or based on fundraising efforts) that benefited people they believed to be mostly illegal aliens.

Since its inception, the Neighborhood Pride Committee’s chief goal has been to clean up ALL AREAS OF OUR TOWN and to restore neighborhood pride IN THOSE AREAS by making people feel good about themselves and also about where they live – ALL RESIDENTS OF FREEHOLD BOROUGH! EVERYONE!

Going into neighborhoods that have just received major street repairs; encouraging additional fixups by the neighbors; and throwing block parties to bring the neighbors together in the spirit of brotherhood and celebration has been the impetus of the committee’s signature event each year – A BLOCK PARTY.

Last I checked – EVERY STREET AND EVERY AREA OF FREEHOLD BOROUGH IS EQUALLY A PART OF OUR TOWN. We don’t pick and choose areas to work in based on who lives there – OUR RESIDENTS. We also do not say NO to whomever offers to help improve ANY AREA of our town. That’s a non-political effort, isn’t it…doing nice things?

We do not need to agree with Casa Freehold, Rita Dentino, The Freehold Landlord Association or illegal immigrants in order to work together with them on positive projects that benefit our town. These are steps in the right direction and things we CAN agree on that need to be done.

Divisiveness will get us nowhere. When committee volunteers are attacked by others for their charity and good deeds, I have a real problem with that.

Nice to see landlords working with their tenants to clean up throckmorton. Why can’t landlords work with their tenants to stop overcrowding their apartment? Why can’t landlords tell their tenants to cooperate with code enforcement?

  • Freehold Drug Bust: Cops Net 17

Freehold was the target of a 17-person drug bust today, launched by local, county, and federal authorities last fall and targeting a drug ring that peddled cocaine, heroin, and painkillers.

Most of the arrests were made earlier today, and police also seized some $28,000 in suspected drug proceeds, according to the Prosecutor's Office.

Wonderful police work! I know it is often frustrating to report suspicious activity in our neighborhoods and then to see “nothing happen” as it continues on, in plain sight. Know that the police are doing their job to get these folks and to make the charges stick.

Why they put a pic of a FBPD car I don’t know. They had nothing to do with this bust. It’s been going on for so long under their noses, they deserve no credit for this.
