  • 3 Deaths on Route 9 in Freehold Township Last Year

by Colleen Curry on January 14th, 2010 | Comment

The lack of sidewalks leading away from bus stops makes it difficult for pedestrians and motorists on Route 9.

Last week, the Asbury Park Press reported that 5 of the 19 pedestrian fatalities on Route 9 occurred in Monmouth County. But according to state records, three of those deaths occurred on the stretch of Route 9 traversing Freehold Township, making it the most dangerous road in our area.

Good news, Colleen, I heard that the potholes were taken care of today.

Now — if only my development association could respond as well as FB public works. I was told this morning when I called that my leaves that gathered so densely and wantonly by my front door would be taken care of today, matter of fact. The decaying and stinking leaves are still partying it up on my porch with every zephyr.

  • You Asked: Why are there No Sidewalks on Route 9?

by Colleen Curry on December 10th, 2009 | Comment

    IMG_2592

We've had some buzz over at our Fixer Upper Map recently: people are wondering why there are no sidewalks on Route 9.

The pedestrian-hostile thoroughfare has multiple bus stops in Freehold Township and Borough, Manalapan, and Howell; and yet, there is nowhere for pedestrians to safely walk once they get off the bus.

    • Mike 2:44 pm on December 11, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Yes, as long as there are bus stops on 9, there should be sidewalks. I live in Manalapan and have a stop right outside my development. Sidewalks in my development lead me straight to the stop. It is similar for residents in the development on the other side of 9 from me. This allows me to leave my car at home, leaving more space on the roads and commuter lots for other residents.

Unfortunately, these stops are at an intersection where a pedestrian may not cross 9 without crossing illegally. This leads to people, for at least one direction of their commute, either running across 9 as they try to time traffic or walking along the side of 9 back to their development and hoping this isn’t the morning/night someone isn’t paying attention and driving on the shoulder. Even more ironic, I’ve almost been hit by a car several times while crossing 9 with the light and in the crosswalk, but have never been while “jaywalking” (which I’ve had to end as I’ve aged and lost a little bit off my step) across the road from the bus stop.

For the most part, there is space along the sides of 9 for a sidewalk or even a simple asphalt pathway. In this day and age, where many residents take NJ Transit buses to work, I don;t think looking for a safe pedestrian walkway along sections of 9 is asking too much. The town councils (at least Manalapan’s) knows about this but say it is a state issue. The DOT will of course blame the pedestrians, as that seems to be what happens every time you hear of a pedestrian being hit by a car on 9, 35 etc., ignoring that their poor designs and 1970s thinking is what put the pedestrian in danger in the first place.

Mike, The only thought that comes to mind when reading your statement is that you’re looking to save a dollar on your parking fees so you can travel to NYC everyday. Sidewalks would be nice, yes; however, sidewalks don’t have anything to do with pedestrians getting hit. I have multiple family members who take the NJ Tranit buses on 9. I’m constantly telling them to watch the cars. This is not NYC with people all over the place. This is NJ with cars all over the place. You need to be sure when crossing that it is safe to cross. I cannot tell you how many times I drive down 9 and see someone jump over medians, or run across without looking due to lack of patience, i’m sure. When you leave that city you need remember it is a different seen here. Good luck with your sidewalks and always look for cars before crossing. Taking a chance, could mean taking your life.

      • Mike 4:20 pm on December 11, 2009 Permalink | Reply

No MYOB, I don’t care about saving a buck (assuming you could get a spot in a daily lot), I care about arriving home safely. That includes walking safely from a bus stop to my house. It is not as if I, or many others, live far away from 9. Plenty of people are in walking distance, but they can’t safely walk there (I guess I should expand my sidewalks argument to the feeder roads).

If you look along 9, you will constantly see people walking along the road or darting across to get to their destination. It’s not because they are lazy, it’s because there is no alternative. And if you had read my entire statement you would have seen my close calls have come when crossing in the crosswalk with the light and not when darting across 9. The dart across 9 is much safer than walking along the shoulders where pedestrians are supposed to walk but drivers seem to feel is an extra lane so they can get to that next jughandle a little faster (police occasionally enforce the law but not enough).

Why should I waste gas and pollute the environment and drive longer to a park and ride then it takes me to walk a bus stop? Sort of defeats the purpose of mass transit, no? And, by your logic, if all decided to be lazy and drive in lieu of getting a littler exercise and walking to the buses, the towns would then have to pay for additional land for parking and deal with added congestion on local roads as more commuters took to their cars to get to the bus. Now you tell me which option saves the buck?

What is wrong with this society that we have to use a car to go everywhere? No wonder we have health issues and are dependent on OPEC to supply our appetite for ever more oil. I know living where we live we are dependent on cars but to force more on the road during the rush hour because we don’t want to pay for sidewalks because someone might save a dollar is pound wise but very penny foolish (and will be more so whenever gas prices shoot up again).

Or, you could either live closer to your job and avoid the problem or work locally. The choice is yours. WE already subsidize a big part of your commute…no more free rides. Live in the city if you want to work there.

      • Mike 2:22 pm on February 1, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Are you insane?? There aren’t near the number of well paying jobs — jobs that enable us to support the local economy, for everyone to live close to work and live in Manalapan (or most suburbs in this area). You made a choice to live here too. Your greed and selfishness explains ALL that is wrong with this every man for themselves country. And I bet you benefit from the tax base the commuters bring into this area more than what the commuters benefit.
